Solid Waste
Improving its managementSolid Waste Management
Atmoterra has been working with numerous solid waste industry clients and regulators and has experience on a variety of solid waste issues (e.g. incinerator, landfill, composting facilities, waste to energy plants, bioreactors) including permitting, construction, operation, closure and post-closure activities.
We have applied innovative technologies such as bio-filtration, surface flux monitoring of landfill gas, design of soil vapour extraction (SVE) systems to allow remediation or property development over closed landfills.
We have solid experience in landfill gas management and site supervision for the installation of HDPE liners.
Atmoterra assists solid waste clients assessing odours arising from their site and propose organisational or technical measures to mitigate or reduce the impact of odour nuisance (including innovative measures such as bio-filtration).

Our services include:
- Waste management minimization;
- Landfill gas wellfield tuning;
- Landfill operation auditing;
- Storm water management;
- Risk management plan and resource consent application;
- Closed landfill assessment and remediation;
- Landfill gas collection and management;
- Odour assessment and mitigation plan;
- Air dispersion modelling and impact assessments (environment and health);
- Air monitoring around incinerators (dry/wet deposition, ambient sampling);
- Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission quantification and reporting;
- Workplace Health and Safety (e.g. chemical hazards, asbestos, ATEX);
- Employees training;
- Public awareness and communication.
Every year, an estimated 11.2 billion tonnes of solid waste are collected worldwide and decay of the organic proportion of solid waste is contributing to about 5 per cent of global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions.
